This term Class 2’s theme is ‘The Romans’.
In English children will read ‘The Magic Brush’and use Talk for Writing to learn the text and innovate the original story with changes of their own. They will then write a brand-new finding and losing story, using the model text for support. Pupils will focus on writing and punctuating dialogue in their stories. . Children will then move on to non – fiction writing which will be recounts and later, studying and writing poetry.
In maths children will recap odd and even numbers and the names of 2D shapes, before drawing different flat shapes according to given specifications. Pupils will count in steps of 2, 3, 4, 5, 8
and 10, using their knowledge of repeated addition and times tables. They will explore length and identify what units of measurements we use to record answers. They will calculate
the perimeter of objects and the difference in length between two items. Children will then move on to 3D shape and direction, before solving + and – word problems. They will also look at the inverse between addition and subtraction.
In science children will investigate the suitability of different materials for a range of purposes, before conducting an experiment to select the most appropriate material to make a waterproof umbrella. Pupils will then move on to studying rocks, fossils and soil. They will make rock observations, identify the three different types of rock, test and classify rocks based on their properties and to learn about their different uses. Pupils will also explore how fossils are formed and what soil is made from. Children will then move on to forces and magnets. They will test the strength of different types of magnet and identify how a magnet is made up of two contrasting poles.
In art, children will produce sketches of Roman emperors to adorn coins indicative to the era. They will explore Roman mosaics and create one of their own. Children will study what Roman shields looked like and why, before making a 3D one. Pupils will also design, make and paint their own clay pots with a scene depicting Roman life.
In Geography and History children will study where the Roman Empire began and establish a chronological understanding of the Roman invasion of Britain. Pupils will discover facts about Roman roads and where they were built in Britain, before investigating why Hadrian’s wall was constructed. Children will explore the life of the emperor, Julius Caesar and investigate the clothing and the houses of Roman citizens. Pupils will identify what a Roman soldier wore in battle and learn about what Romans liked to eat. Children will also discover what Romans enjoyed doing in their leisure time and write numbers in Roman numerals.
In music they will describe some instruments used in the era and give examples of when music was played. Pupils will listen to music of the time and reflect on how it evokes a mood.
In Music pupils will research the names of some famous Roman emperors, before investigating what was embossed on coins in the era, what the coins were made of and what they were used for. Children will identify how technology is used in the wider world and take part in some E – Safety Day activities.
In PE children will focus on gymnastics and dance. They will develop body tension, control and balance, as well as moving with greater agility and coordination. They will practice a variety of
jumps, shapes, balances and rolls. Pupils will use vault while developing their understanding of the necessary flexibility, strength and control needed to perform these movements successfully.
In MFL they will learn new vocabulary related tothe seasons, days of the week and months of the year. They will re – visit numbers from 1 – 20.
In RE pupils will study Christian and Islamic sacred texts and explore how the stories within them send a very special message to their believers on what pleases God/Allah.
Children will identify the Muslim place of worship and then look at the Christian festival of Easter.
