Class 1’s theme this term is ‘Here, There and Everywhere’.
In English we will be reading and retelling the story of ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers and using this text to develop our story writing focusing on story ‘beginnings and endings’. The children will look at other ‘Losing Tales,’ such as ‘Dogger’, ‘Where’s my Teddy’ and ‘Come on Daisy’. We will share stories every day to support our own storytelling and story writing and continue to follow Oxford Reading Tree’s ‘Floppy phonics’ programme in our daily phonic sessions.
In maths the focus this term is to develop further the skills for counting, addition, subtraction and use these to solve simple problems. The children will be encouraged to use
talk to explain their solutions. They will explore different positional language used to describe movement. We will consider use of measurements, multiplication and division in everyday practical
problems.
In science we will be looking at various animals that live place within the natural world. We will focus on those in cold climates and consider the ways they differ to animals in our country. We will
talk about how they survive in such cold places. A focus will be to compare different types of penguins. The Class will also explore their senses.
In Art and Design we will be using a variety of media to create pictures, models and collage linked to our topic. The children look at different artists and use their imagination to create their own animal art. They will also use junk modelling, drawing and painting to develop techniques and experience different textures.
In Geography we will explore the UK and the World, finding out the names of the 7 continents and compass points. Our focus will be looking at cold climates and how people and animals
live in the North and South Poles.
In History the children will look at what makes people explore the world and they will focus on some famous explorers in the past and the different areas they travelled to.
In computing the children will look at what makes people explore the world and they will focus on some famous explorers in the past and the different areas they travelled to.
In PE children will learn to move and balance like different jungle animals. They will be experimenting with moving around, under, through and over small and large
equipment. The class will learn about jumping, rolling and balancing and perform different types of jumps and balances on the floor and on different gymnastics equipment. Children will learn different types of rolls and practise and perform these in short gymnastic sequences they create. Children will describe how the body feels when still and when exercising.
In Music the children will learn new songs and listen to various pieces of music, exploring the tempo and instruments used to create sounds. They will respond to the beat and look
at African drums and dance.
In RE the children will consider ‘What is special about our world.’ They will reflect on theirown experiences of the things inthe world that they see as wonderful. They will look at art and stories
to explore how to care for animals and the world.
In PSHE the children will be looking atfriendships, ways to build confidence and manage feelings. We will explore more of the values within our school and the community and
ways to keep safe.
