Through our ongoing association with the Golden Valley Reuse and Recycle Group the school kindly received a donation of numerous perennial and bi-annual plants from Allensmore Nurseries.
Allensmore have provided hundreds of plants to schools in Herefordshire that are part of the reuse and recycle group with the aim of getting children to understand plants, planting and how to care for them. The ‘best school in bloom’ will then be chosen later in the year.
The initiative has meant that pupils at Kings Caple have benefitted from:
- being outdoors planting in the wonderful sunshine that we have been having;
- working collaboratively with one another to chose a planting scheme;
- a deeper understanding of plant types and the conditions that they need to grow;
- the benefits that plants bring to our mental well-being, the survival of insects and animal species and to ‘greening’ our built environments.
We had a small area immediately outside our playground entrance which was looking very tired, full of weeds and in need of some TLC. An ideal candidate for this project! Staff battled with the hard ground and improved the impoverished soil to create a planting bed and the children spent a happy afternoon filling it with foliage!
The photographs below show the ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots.
We want to say a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to both Allensmore Nurseries and Golden Valley Reuse and Recycle Group, without whom this project would not have been possible.
