For the past few years Kings Caple have participated in the Mervyn Morgan Tree Planting project (MMTPP). Mervyn was a keen environmentalist who wanted to protect the countryside in the Herefordshire Wye Valley AONB.

In order to increase the number and diversity of native trees in this area he wanted to give children attending primary schools in the Wye Valley AONB a young tree to plant wherever they and their parents wished, as permitted by the landowner, preferably in a location where they could watch them grow. Mervyn’s wife, Virginia, is able to implement his wishes and annually children in Year 6 are offered a young tree. This year the tree choice includes a poplar, a hornbeam or a silver birch. The trees are expected to be delivered to school sometime in January. In normal circumstances, Virginia would talk to the children about the trees and how to plant and care for them, however, this year this will not be possible so the trees will be delivered to the school. There will be no ongoing supervision of the trees. Each tree will come with a rabbit guard, a supporting cane and a leaflet provided by the project.

Parents of children in Year 6 have received a letter explaining the project and are asked to return the reply slip to school as soon as possible indicating their tree choice and by Friday 4th December at the latest. If it is easier for parents to send an email to admin@kc.hmfa.org.uk please indicate your wish to take part and the preferred tree choice in this way.
