Class 3 News

Maths

At the start of the year, children were learning place value and were looking at how to turn a number like this: 1,835,347 – into words. They were also learning how to turn a number (in words) like this: one million eight hundred thousand and two – into digits! The children later moved onto Shapes and had to relearn Shapes in a Bag! After all, Shapes aren’t the easiest part of maths. They did get the hang of it in the end though. The children now moved onto four rules. They started with addition – mainly column addition which most of them knew and did a few activity lessons on addition. They later moved onto subtraction doing the same thing. Most of them also knew this and then onto multiplication. The Year Fours learnt short multiplication. The Year Fives and Sixes learnt long multiplication and – again – the children did very well on this and therefore moved onto division. The Year Fours have been learning Short Division; the Year Fives and Sixes learning Long Division. The Year Fives and Sixes were slightly confused at first but then they got the hang of it!

English

The children learnt about The Lost Thing. It is an animation on YouTube about 20 minutes long. It is about a man who finds something (a creature that has no name) and in the story it is called the Lost Thing. He doesn’t know where to put it and he doesn’t know its owner. The children boxed up this story and made their own Lost Thing stories. After that, the children went onto speech and parenthesis. A week later they were learning how to make instructions. In their case, how to make a World War 2 cake! In November, they started by learning about formal letters. They wrote a formal letter to the Herefordshire Council about why Kings Caple Primary Academy should have the land behind the school. This is a reply to the letter Mr M Baker sent Miss Cadien saying that the field will be used for ‘retirement flats’! Soon after, they were learning about co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions within sentences. They then went back to the formal letter work with a mind map. They also boxed up why Kings Caple Primary Academy should have the land behind the school. They then did a diary about the life of Anne Frank. On the week of Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday, they made sad poems about World War 1. They then went back to the Anne Frank diary topic. After that, they were learning about autobiographies! They also learnt narrative voice during this topic. They then had a go at making their sentences more descriptive and now they are learning play scripts. Phew! That’s a lot of English!!!

Science

We started learning about human and animal growth from birth. They also listed things that affect development. After that, they made a poster on Microsoft Word®/Microsoft Publisher® about why we should sleep. After that, they did a few charts on how many bicep curls people in Class 3 can do. Most people (without a weight) got 120-149 bicep curls! The children also completed some questions on this. They then made water filters and learnt about separation – this was all quite fun. However, they did get messy on some of these experiments! Then they learnt about solids, liquids and gases! Now they’re learning about suitability of materials and circuits.

RE/PSHE

In September, the children learnt how religious beliefs could affect people’s decisions. Soon after in PSHE, the children drew what makes them happy, sad, angry and worried. However, we also have value assemblies so this is not the only PSHE this year.

PE

The children first learnt about Netball. They learnt about marking and about not moving when you have the ball in Netball! Some of Class 3 went to the Hi-5 Netball tournament at John Kyrle and did extremely well. Secondly, they were onto Football. This for a short amount of time but this is probably a majority of Class 3’s favourite sport. During this, they continued the Netball topic and started Rugby. Around this time, a majority of Class 3 went to the HMFA Netball Tournament. This involved all the schools in the HMFA and was the first HMFA tournament of the school year 2017/18. They were 3rd in eight schools including Kings Caple, Lord Scudamore, Llangrove, Marden, Saint Weonards, Sutton, Canon Pyon and the newest addition – Pencombe. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you can see that all of these schools are in the HMFA! Right now, they are working on Rugby. On 6 November 2017, Class 1, 2 and 3 had a big PE lesson!

ICT

The children had one lesson on ICT and that was about the World Wide Web. They learnt about http:// and how it’s used on a website. For example: https://kingscaple.hmfa.org.uk – where all the important news is! They also learnt about how the World Wide Web is different to Internet. For example, when you open Google Chrome®, you are not opening ‘The Internet’.
