As part of Class 1 and 2’s history topic, the children were surprised on Friday morning with an experience of ‘Victorian’ schooling. Having previously looked and historic journals, diaries and documents relating to Kings Caple School in the late 1800s and early 1900’s the teaching staff dressed in Victorian costume and welcomed the pupils to the playground and school in a slightly less familiar way!
The children were taught in a much more austere fashion for the morning and learnt using ‘chalk boards’ rather than tablets. Victorian school children punishments were explained to them and the difference between them and now was really brought to life. The experience was used as a stimulus for their writing and the children really enjoyed their morning.
