Autumnal Safety

Normally at this time of year children get involved in activities relating to Halloween and bonfire night. With adults and children alike dressing up to celebrate, some children can feel quite scared if approached by an individual dressed as a ghost, pumpkin skeleton or other object synonymous with the time of year. Some of these individuals may be strangers and so it is a good time of year to reinforce ‘stranger danger’ with children, giving children rules and tips if they meet someone that they do not know or do not know well. Alongside this advice it is also important that children understand that there are adults that they can turn to if they are on their own or in trouble, such as police officers and paramedics who are usually in uniform.

There are lots of resources online to help transfer the message to children. The NSPCC site is a good starting point for resources for parents and at home. See https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/away-from-home/
