In recognition of the RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch 2019, there will be lots of opportunities in school over the next couple of weeks to take part in bird related activities.

Class 1 will be taking part in the Big School’s Birdwatch this week.  Mrs Talboys has some inspiring bird watching and counting activities planned, turning the class into conservation scientists and tracking the ups and downs of birds in our local environment.  The class will then send their survey results to the RSPB who, after the 22 February, will share country-wide school findings.

Mrs Meredith has already made a selection of ‘lardy’ bird feeders with a group of children.  These delicacies included lots of grated cheese, mealworms, raisins and seeds all mixed with lard… a real feast for the birds who struggle to find food at this time of year. Some even had twig ‘perches’ attached so that the birds could access the feeders more easily!

The children continue to have the opportunity to monitor bird species and movements in the area developed for them alongside the main school corridor using the resources and ‘spotter’ charts that are placed adjacent to the windows.  Don’t forget to remind children to write down whatever birds they see in the playground and around the school on the sheets in the corridor!
